What to Mix with Bacardi Silver Rum

Short answer: mint and lime, cola, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, or orange juice. Five builds are below, each one measured.

Bacardi Superior is a white rum bottled at 40% ABV, filtered and aged briefly before the colour is removed. It is the default white rum in most standard rum cocktails, which is the reason this list looks familiar.

White rum is the background spirit

White rum is designed to sit underneath other ingredients rather than lead. That is why nearly every recipe below is rum plus one juice: the mixer is carrying the drink and the rum is providing the alcohol and a base note.

The practical version of that: with white rum, spend your attention on the mixer. Fresh lime in a mojito matters more than which white rum went into it.

At 40% ABV, a 1.5 oz pour is one standard drink.

Five builds

Mojito

• 1.5 oz rum
• 1 oz fresh lime juice
• 2 tsp sugar
• Mint leaves
• Soda water to top

Press the mint gently with the lime and sugar rather than shredding it. Torn mint goes bitter and leaves green flecks in the glass. Add rum and ice, top with soda.

Rum and cola

• 1.5 oz rum
• 4 oz cola
• Lime wedge

Build over ice, stir gently. Squeeze the lime in. With the lime it is a Cuba Libre, without it it is a rum and coke, and the difference is real.

Rum and pineapple

• 1.5 oz rum
• 3 oz pineapple juice
• Lime or pineapple slice

Build over ice, stir. Shaking rather than stirring this one gives you the foam on top that you get in a bar.

Cranberry rum punch

• 1.5 oz rum
• 3 oz cranberry juice
• Splash of soda water

Build over ice. Check whether your cranberry is juice or juice cocktail, since the second is considerably sweeter.

Rum and orange

• 1.5 oz rum
• 3 oz fresh orange juice
• Orange slice

Build over ice, stir.
