Short answer: cola, ginger beer, pineapple juice, apple cider, or orange juice. Five builds are below, each one measured.
Captain Morgan Original Spiced is bottled at 35% ABV, which is lower than a standard rum at 40%. It is also sweetened, and the sweetening is the thing worth understanding before you mix it.
The flavor profile section that used to sit at the top of this page has been removed. We sell this bottle, so describing how it tastes is advertising rather than information.
Spiced rum is a flavored category
Spiced rum is rum with flavoring and usually sugar added after distillation. That is a category fact rather than a criticism, but it has one practical consequence: the base already carries sweetness, so pairing it with a sweet mixer stacks sugar on sugar.
Three of the five mixers below are sweet. If a drink comes out cloying, the fix is lime or soda water rather than less rum.
At 35% ABV, a 1.5 oz pour is a little under one standard drink.
Five builds
Rum and cola
- 1.5 oz rum
- 4 oz cola
- Lime wedge
Build over ice, stir gently. Squeeze the lime rather than perching it on the rim. It is doing work here, not decoration.
Spiced mule
- 1.5 oz rum
- 4 oz ginger beer
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
Build over ice in a mug, stir. Ginger beer rather than ginger ale, since the drier one holds up better against a sweetened base.
Pineapple punch
- 1.5 oz rum
- 3 oz pineapple juice
- Splash of soda water
Build over ice. The soda water is not optional if you want this to stay drinkable past the first one.
Spiced apple cider
- 1.5 oz rum
- 4 oz apple cider, warm or chilled
- Cinnamon stick
Stir together. If serving warm, heat the cider first and add the rum off the heat, since boiling it drives off the alcohol and the aromatics both.
Rum and orange
- 1.5 oz rum
- 3 oz fresh orange juice
- Orange slice
Build over ice, stir gently. The most acid-forward of the five, and the one that cuts the sweetness best.
