Which Johnnie Walker is best?
With Johnnie Walker, you’ve got to make a choice: which label are you going to bring home? Depending on the flavors you’re after, or how you plan on drinking your whiskey, a particular color of Johnnie Walker might be best. Luckily we’ve got a breakdown below.
Johnnie Walker Red Label
Johnnie Walker Red Label is officially the bestselling blended Scotch whiskey around the world, no joke. Johnnie Walker goes to the four corners of Scotland, taking the best local Scotch whiskeys and mixing them together for Red Label. It is well-loved for it’s spicy and smoky flavor, with just a touch of vanilla. If you’re looking for a cocktail Scotch, Red Label is what you want: it’s great in an old fashioned or a whiskey sour.
Johnnie Walker Black Label
Johnnie Walker Black Label is a blend of Scotch whiskeys that is aged for 12 years. The aging gives it a more mature and full-bodied flavor than Red Label, but it still remains versatile enough to be used in cocktails, like a hot toddy, or sipped on it’s own. The vanilla and smoke characteristic of Red Label remains, but sugars in the malt base of Black Label also take on a toffee flavor after being aged this long. Combined with an oaken earthiness from the casks, you’ve got yourself a real deep and complex Scotch whiskey. Black Label definitely loves to read his poetry at the open mic in that weird basement cafe downtown.
Johnnie Walker Double Black Label
Johnnie Walker Double Black Label is the newest blend on the market. In 2011, Master Blender Jim Beveridge decided to create a new blend that would showcase the strong, peaty flavors of Western Scottish whisky. Double Black Label is aged 12 years, just like the OG, but the blend contains a higher percentage of West Coast and Island Scottish whiskeys, whose provincial drams can best be described as “hardcore.” The powerful blend is then aged in charred oak casks – hence, “double black.” If Black Label is reading poetry at the open mic, Double Black Label is playing bass in a smooth jazz band. Double Black is best served neat or on the rocks.
Johnnie Walker Green Label
Johnnie Walker Green Label evokes springtime in the Highlands, rich with wood and botanical notes. Green Label is a blend of the finest Highland malt whiskeys, aged minimum of 15 years. This is not a Scotch for cocktails. You should savor Green Label neat, preferably outside on the heath, in your kilt, with bagpipes accompanying.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label
Johnnie Walker Blue Label: the creme de la creme of blended Scotch whiskey. Based on a recipe from 1867, Blue Label uses only the best of the best: prime Scottish malt whiskeys aged in oak casks specially selected for their high quality. Definitely do not try and mix this beautiful blend with some sour mix. Don’t even put an ice cube in your glass! Blue Label needs to be enjoyed (responsibly) on its own. Each bottle comes in a silk-lined box with a certificate of authenticity, so it’s not a bad gift either.
