Pappy Van Winkle is known the rarest whiskey in the world, sought after by many connoisseurs for as much as $5,000 a bottle (if you can find it):
Why so high a price? Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery only releases between 7,000-8,000 cases, a dramatically lower number than other bourbon distilleries, which can produce around 7 million cases a year. Supply also contributes to the soaring prices, since the company must wait over two decades to sell the bourbon along with losing about 50 gallons for every 3 gallons made.
The hunt for the product is so cutthroat that there was even a Pappy heist in 2013:
With 65 cases of the bourbon stolen from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Only 20 have been recovered – all since destroyed from fear of them having been tampered with. This bourbon is sought after by many, but find by few, so few that the some-odd number of bars who have acquired it can sell single pours for around $80. (We’ve even seen it on eBay for $300… and the bottle was empty)
