Summer date nights are easy. Head to a rooftop beer garden, pop a bottle on the beach, sip Sangria at sunset, the options are endless. But what about when that winter weather’s got you hesitant to leave the house?

We suggest planning a romantic date night from the comfort of home. Whether you cook together or order in, you should never ignore your date to mix drinks. Avoid the awkward shouting across the room by mixing up a batch cocktail in advance. Throw together some Winter Sangria before your date arrives and you’ll have drinks for the whole night. You’ll both appreciate the ease of premade cocktails, as you refill your glasses again and again, without ever missing a moment.

Ingredients

4 cups (1L) Campo Viejo
4 oz Korbel VSOP
4 oz. Cointreau
Juice of 1⁄2 a large lemon
1  tbsp sugar
2  oranges, thinly sliced into half-moons
1 Granny Smith apple, cored and diced
1 pear, cored and diced
Seeds from 1⁄2 a pomegranate
3 to 4 cups cold soda water

Directions

Mix wine, brandy, Cointreau or triple sec, lemon juice, sugar and oranges in large pitcher. Stir with wooden spoon to dissolve sugar, then use spoon to press down on orange slices to release juices. Add remaining fruit and chill. Fill glasses with ice cubes, pour in sangria along with some fruit, and top with soda water. Stir and serve.

Remember that bland red punch they served at every dance and after school activity when you were a kid? You’d awkwardly stand and sip your punch in the corner of the cafeteria (made to look like a winter wonderland), trying summon the strength to head out on that dance floor. You probably didn’t find much courage at the bottom of that punch glass. That’s because you weren’t old enough to have Rum.

If you’re looking for some courage during date night, we suggest whipping up a batch of Pomegranate Rum Punch. A much more mature version of the fruit punch from your very first date, this drink can definitely get you dancing.
