Gordon’s Gin history

Learning the story of this wonderful spirit

Last night, I had a delicious gin martini. It was so tasty, that I ordered another one against my better judgement. It’s a good thing that I had someone to drive me home that night!

And no, the gin wasn’t Gordon’s, it was Bombay Sapphire. However, I did see the bottle of Gordon’s on their booze shelf. And as someone whose been writing alcohol history blogs for a week now, it got me thinking. What’s the Gordon’s Gin history? Is it as rich, deep, or detailed as the history of Bacardi, or Guinness, or Budweiser? Let’s find out!

Gordon’s gin history

The Gordon’s gin history story starts with a man named Alexander Gordon (seems the gin is aptly named.) In 1769, he built a distillery in an area of London that was known for it’s exceptionally clean water. So right there, there’s a big plus! The recipe for the gin is the same today as it was then, making it one of the longest-enduring spirit recipes out there.

Much later, in 1898, Gordon’s joined forces with another very popular brand of gin: Tanqueray. This made the new name of the combined companies Tanqueray Gordon and Co. Gordon’s gin history enjoyed a long, fruitful line of events leading up to today, including having several years where the infamous Gordon Ramsay was their spokesperson. Today, Gordon’s is distributed by England-based liquor giant, Diageo.
