A 900 mAh cell is unusually large for a 6 mL disposable; the design uses the battery’s size, rather than recharging, to make sure the power outlasts the liquid. Advertised puff counts are manufacturer figures measured by machine under fixed conditions and are not a promise of how long a device lasts in use. Hyppe’s later devices, including the Max Flow 5000 and the Max Air, carry a USB-C port and a smaller battery that is meant to be topped up as the larger liquid reservoir is used down; those are the “rechargeable disposables” and they charge with an ordinary cable.

How to tell which kind you have

Look at the bottom of the device. A rechargeable disposable has a USB-C (or on older models micro-USB) port; a sealed one has only an airflow vent or nothing. There is no version of the original Max Flow with a port, and no firmware, adapter or trick converts one into the other.

Why a sealed disposable cannot be charged

Rechargeable devices contain a protection circuit that limits current, stops the charge when the cell is full and cuts off on a short. A sealed disposable has none of that, because it was never designed to take a charge. The methods that circulate online involve opening the casing and connecting wires to the bare cell, which bypasses every safeguard: a lithium-ion cell that is overcharged, shorted or punctured fails by heating, venting and igniting, and a cell that gets warm during such an attempt is not charging, it is failing. The US Fire Administration and the FDA both track vape battery fires, and improvised charging is one of the recurring causes. There is no careful way to do it, and this page does not describe it.

What to do with a dead one

Do not put it in household trash or curbside recycling. The lithium cell can ignite in a garbage truck or at a sorting facility, and many municipal fires in waste facilities are traced to small batteries. Most cities operate battery or e-waste drop-offs at hardware stores, libraries or recycling centers, and some vape retailers take used devices back. If you go through many of them, that is the practical argument for a device with a replaceable pod and a rechargeable battery, which puts one battery in the waste stream instead of dozens.

Where the Max Flow stands legally

Like nearly every disposable, the Hyppe Max Flow has no FDA marketing authorization, which makes it unlawful to sell anywhere in the US subject to the FDA’s enforcement discretion, and it is sold in flavors that are banned outright in California, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island and excluded from the vape directories in Florida, North Carolina, Wisconsin and other states.
