Jack Daniels history
Understanding one of the world’s most popular whiskeys
Everyone has heard the name Jack Daniels at some point in their lives. And it always makes them think of the same thing: that black label with the elegant white lettering. That tall, rectangular bottle filled with the smooth, amber-colored liquid. And then there’s the taste; silky, with just the right amount of burn, and a slight note of cinnamon.
The beginning of Jack Daniels history starts in Tennessee. It involves a young boy, aptly named Jack, whose father was killed in the Civil War. He hated his stepmother so much that he ran away, until as a teenager, he was taken in by a moonshine distiller named Dan Call. Jack learned the distilling trade from Dan and his right-hand man, Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green, an emancipated slave who stayed with him after he was freed. When Call quit, Jack took the distillery over, and it became his. And there’s the first stepping stone in Jack Daniels history.
Origin of the number 7
Apparently, the number 7 exists because of the government. They forced him to change the registry number that was assigned to him. His number became 16, but he continued to put ‘old No. 7’ on the bottles so that customers could continue to see the number his brand had identified with. And when his whiskey won a gold medal award at the 1904 St. Louis world fair, it got way more popular. And even the temperance movement, which lasted for over a decade, couldn’t kill the spirit of his brand! To this day, people remember this history of Jack Daniels as one of a classic, American whisky!
