Smirnoff History

Smirnoff history

The story behind one of the most popular vodkas

Go to just about any bar in the USA, and you’ll likely see Smirnoff somewhere behind the bar. It’s by far one of the most widely-used brands of vodka in the world, and is even regularly featured on the popular Spike TV program, Bar Rescue. But just how did this bottle of ‘russian courage’ become so popular?

The Smirnoff history

Well, Pyotr Arsenjevitch Smirnov started his Moscow-based distillery in 1864, named PA Smirnoff. And it turns out that shred, clever marketing isn’t just a new things for Smirnoff, either. No, the Smirnoff history is steeped in it. Pyotr became the first businessman to get around anti-alcohol sermons with newspaper ads, and charity donations to clergymen. Supposedly, the Smirnoff brand was a favorite of the Tsar! When he was dead, his son Vladimir Smirnov. Unfortunately, in 1904 the Tsar nationalized the distillery. This pretty much forced Vladimir to sell.

Fast forward to 1933, when Vladimir sold the right to produce Smirnoff in North America to Rudolph Kunnett. In 1939 Rudolph sold the rights to Smirnoff to John Martin, who owned the company behind A1 steak sauce. He began selling the vodka has ‘white whiskey’ to better appeal to the American consumers. Smirnoff became very popular with Russian troops after the Berlin Wall came down. Fast forward to 2006, when a deal with British-based company Diageo.
