Bacardi History

Bacardi history

The famous story behind the big company, and big rum

Bacardi is the biggest family-owned, and privately held spirits company in the world. But the rich history of this brand extends far back, all the way to the 1800’s. Let’s touch a bit on the Bacardi history, and see how it came to be where it is today.

It all started with a Spanish wine merchant in 1830, named Facundo Bacardi Masso. He was on a mission to make rum, which wasn’t considered worthy of upscale taverns, a clean, popular drink. He isolated a strand of yeast that’s still used today in Bacardi’s production. But, more impressively he was the one that found out that charcoal filtration removes impurities! Finally, he aged the rum in white oak barrels. This mellowed the rum, and resulted in the world’s first ‘white rum.’

In 1862 he set up distillery with his brother, Jose. The building had fruit bats living in the rafters, and those bats inspired Bacardi’s infamous logo. The logo also enabled customers to easily identify their product, at a time when illiteracy was very common. After the Cuban Independence war, the Daquiri and the original ‘Cuba Libre’ were both created with Bacardi rum. In 1899, Emilio Bacardi, Facundo’s son, was proclaimed mayor of Santiago de Cuba. And in 1922, he opened a new distillery in Santiago De Cuba. Bacardi history is indeed rich!

There is much more to it’s history that we simply can’t fit into one blog post!
