Is ZYN Bad For You? | ZYN vs. Snus, Cigarettes, and Vapes

ZYN is a nicotine pouch: a small fiber pouch of nicotine salt and fillers with no tobacco leaf in it, held under the lip. Snus is the Swedish product it is modeled on, made with ground tobacco. Cigarettes burn tobacco; vapes heat a nicotine liquid into an aerosol. All four deliver nicotine, and nicotine is addictive in every format. What this page does is lay out what each product is, what it contains, what the FDA has decided about each one, and what the federal agencies say about the health question, with links so you can read the primary sources.

What ZYN is

ZYN is made by Swedish Match, which Philip Morris International bought in November 2022, at a plant in Owensboro, Kentucky. Each pouch contains nicotine salt (nicotine bitartrate), plant fibers, fillers, pH adjusters, sweeteners and flavoring, sealed in a nonwoven pouch. It contains no tobacco leaf, which is why it is sold as “tobacco-free,” and it is sold at two strengths, 3 mg and 6 mg of nicotine per pouch, 15 pouches to a can. It is the largest-selling nicotine pouch in the US. Because it contains nicotine derived from tobacco or made synthetically, it has been regulated by the FDA as a tobacco product since 2022.

What the FDA has decided

The FDA’s decisions are the closest thing to an official answer to the question in the title, and they are on the public record.

ZYN. On January 16, 2025, the FDA issued marketing orders for 20 ZYN products (ten flavors, each at 3 mg and 6 mg), the first authorization of any nicotine pouch. On June 30, 2026, it went further and issued modified-risk orders for the same 20 products, allowing Philip Morris to market them with a specific claim. The FDA’s authorized wording is: “Using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.” The same FDA announcement states: “There is no safe tobacco product, and those who do not use tobacco products should not start.” The orders expire after five years unless renewed. That claim belongs to the manufacturer under the terms of the order; this page reports it as a regulatory fact and does not make it.

Snus. In October 2019 the FDA issued the first modified-risk orders in its history, for eight General Snus products made by Swedish Match, with a similar authorized claim comparing snus to cigarettes. Those orders were renewed in 2024.

Cigarettes. The FDA has never been asked to find cigarettes appropriate for public health; brands on the market before 2007 are grandfathered. Its position on the product is the set of warnings it requires and its proposal, made in January 2025, to cap nicotine in cigarettes at a minimally addictive level.

Vapes. The FDA has authorized 48 e-cigarette products from five companies as of August 2026, all in tobacco or menthol flavors except two Glas fruit pods sold with an age-locked device, and none of them disposables. Every other vape on the market is unauthorized.

What the health agencies say

The CDC states that nicotine is highly addictive, can harm adolescent brain development, and is unsafe for young people, pregnant women and adults who do not currently use tobacco. It notes that nicotine pouches are new enough that their long-term effects are still being studied, and that no nicotine pouch or e-cigarette is approved as a quit-smoking aid. The Surgeon General’s reports on smoking document the diseases caused by burning tobacco and the diseases associated with smokeless tobacco. None of the agencies describes any of these products as safe.

What this page does not do

It does not tell you whether ZYN is bad for you, and it does not rank the four products. The FDA’s authorized claim for ZYN is a comparison to cigarettes made by the manufacturer under a federal order; it is not a statement that ZYN is harmless, and it says nothing about using ZYN if you do not already smoke. If the question is about your own health, the answer comes from a doctor with the sources below in hand.

Where ZYN can be sold

ZYN’s authorized products are legal nationwide for adults 21 and over. Flavored-tobacco laws in Massachusetts and California restrict which pouches may be sold there. In Texas, where Saucey delivers nicotine products, all authorized ZYN products are lawful, and what is stocked near you depends on your address.
