How To Make The Ultimate Manhattan

The glitz. The glamour. The palpable buzz you’ll feel after taking just a few sips. Named after The City That Never Sleeps, a Manhattan is a delicious and iconic cocktail that can be infinitely riffed on. But you simply can’t go wrong with a classic version. Bust out the bourbon (we love to bust out the Bulleit Bourbon) and practice your best old-timey New York accent. Things are about to get classy in here.

Ingredients:

2 oz. Bulleit Bourbon or Bulleit Rye

1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

Cherry garnish (optional, but…come on.)

How to make a Manhattan:

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice cubes. Give it a good stir. Strain into a chilled rocks glass. Garnish with the cherry. Bust out a Broadway show tune (optional).

What’s the difference between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned?

They’re quite similar in that they both use bourbon and bitters. But an Old Fashioned also gets a sugar cube or some simple syrup, whereas a Manhattan gets vermouth instead. In other words, an Old Fashioned is a little sweet and a Manhattan is less so (though there’s a little sweetness from the vermouth).

Is a Manhattan a girly drink?

“Girly” drinks are a construct, duh. Manhattans are supremely well-balanced drinks. And it’s bourbon mixed with more alcohol; what’s not to love?

Should I shake or stir a Manhattan?

Stir. Every day of the week. Shaking a Manhattan will turn it cloudy.
