Bombay Sapphire History

Bombay Sapphire history

The quintessential ‘blue gin’; where did it come from?

I myself have never tried Bombay Sapphire. Personally, I’ve always gone for Tanqueray, mostly because I know it’s good. However, I may make an exception after finding out a bit more about this drink. And all you other gin lovers out there may want to give it a chance too, if you haven’t already. Whether you do or not, I’m going to launch right into the Bombay Sapphire history.

The Bombay Sapphire history doesn’t go very far back; just back to 1987. Take a look at their website, and you’ll see they talk a lot about the careful selection of their botanicals. These botanicals are infused into the gin during the distillation phase.

But enough about the process; let’s talk about the actual Bombay Sapphire history. The brand was launched in 1987 by IDV, which later became part of Diageo. Later, Diageo sold ownership of the brand over to Bacardi, who still owns it today.

The Bombay Sapphire history also includes the origin of it’s name. The word ‘Bombay’ is a reference to how popular gin used to be in India, during the time of the British Raj. The word ‘sapphire’ refers to the jewel on display at the Smithsonian Institution, the Star of Bombay. And finally, calling it blue gin is technically incorrect; the bottle is blue, not the gin.
