New Year’s Eve night always carries unneeded pressure with it to “have a good time.” I’ve realized recently that I think I have more fun at the get-together before the night “begins.” In fact, I think I’m close to swearing off the whole night altogether. Here are some great drinking games that could turn your NYE pregame into the highlight reel on December 31st.
Resolution Guessing Game
What You’ll Need:
- Paper and pens
- A jar
Rules:
Everyone writes their New Year’s resolution and places it in a jar. Take turns drawing a resolution, and the group guesses who it belongs to. If the majority guess correctly, the resolution’s owner drinks. Otherwise, wrong guessers drink.
2 Resolutions & a Lie
What You’ll Need:
- Just your wit and a keen sense of humor
Rules:
A New Years Eve-y twist on Two Truths and a Lie. Each person shares two real resolutions and one made-up. The others guess which one is the lie. Everyone who guessed wrong takes a drink; if the majority of the group gets the lie correct, then the person who gave the resolutions drinks. This game provides a fun way to reveal aspirations with friends.
Cheers to the Governor
What You’ll Need:
- A group of friends ready for a challenge
Rules:
Count to 21 in turns, taking a drink every time you get to the end or restarting if someone makes a mistake. If you reach 21, you get to make a new rule for a number. Get the full rules for Cheers to the Governor here.
King’s Cup
What You’ll Need:
- A deck of cards
- A large cup (King’s Cup)
- Your choice of drink
Rules:

What’s My Problem?
What You’ll Need:
- A circle of close friends with thick skin
Rules:
What’s My Problem? could turn into your new favorite drinking game if you’re with the right kind of friends. One person leaves the room while the rest decide on their ‘biggest problem.’ The person returns and guesses their problem, taking small sips for each wrong guess. Ideal for groups who know each other well. This can be a great way to ensure your resolutions are based in, well, reality.
Countdown Trivia
What You’ll Need:
- Trivia questions about New Year’s Eve traditions
Rules:
Answer trivia about global New Year’s Eve customs. Drink for wrong answers, celebrate right ones. That’s what they call edutainment.
Would You Rather
What You’ll Need:
- A device with internet access
- The website Would You Rather
Rules:
Players choose between two scenarios on the website. Those in the minority drink. A modern twist that’s sure to provoke laughter and debates.
